Part 3 of my journey to Guadalajara
My God … Equips His People.
As I read today, I am reminded of my experience in Guadalajara. God has specific assignments for you and for me. They aren’t extra credit. They are assigned tasks that He desires to partner with us in. But, ministry is like college. It’s optional. No one makes you do it. God simply creates the opportunity.
2 Chronicles 35:3-5
Now spend your time serving the Lord your God and his people. Report for duty… Then stand in the sanctuary … and help the families assigned to you…
1 Corinthians 1:7-9
Now you have every spiritual gift you need as you eagerly wait for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will keep you strong to the end so that you will be free from all blame on the day when our Lord Jesus Christ returns. God will do this, for he is faithful to do what he says, and he has invited you into partnership with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Every day God, The Father, invites you and I to partner with Him. My trip to Calvary Chapel Guadalajara cemented this fact into my heart in a very real way. Now, more than ever, I understand that God has “assigned” ministries to each of us. Some of them land right in the center of our comfort zone and are an easy “yes, Lord.” But, others are intended to stretch us, shape us, and grow us into a deeper faith. These ministries are done not in our own power but in the Lord’s strength with careful attention to our giftings.
This summer, the families assigned to me lived in a small town in Guadalajara. I am so thankful that I picked up that assignment and accepted it. (Because, I nearly didn’t. You can read about my struggle to be brave, here.)
God supplies the assignment. God gives us the spiritual gifts we need to complete the assignment. The obedience part, that is up to us. Once again, I learned our of obedience blessing flows. The amount of love and tenderness I received from the families assigned to me in Guadalajara was beyond anything I’ve ever received from doing ministry. God’s blessing poured over my heart, encouraged me, spurred me on and equipped me for my next assignment through the precious words, hugs and smiles of these sweet women.
I was called to go and encourage – that was my assignment. My first reaction to that call was, “Are you sure you want me?” (Yes, I even said those words out loud. You can read details, here.) But, when I stepped in obedience, it was I who was encouraged. Going to Guadalajara required me to take my gifts and lay them in the hands of the Lord. I prayed and prayed and prayed that God would give me the right words for these women. I “reported for duty” in Guadalajara. I “stood in the sanctuary” and shared His hope, His truth, His promises with the women in this small town. I “helped the families assigned to me.” And, when I was finished, the Lord blessed me and filled me through those very women. One by one, the women lined up to thank me, kiss me, hug me, squeeze me. I will never forget that day as long as I live.
Sweet sister, I encourage you to GO WHERE GOD WANTS YOU. You will never regret it. Learn to sit with Him each day. Discipline yourself to read His Word and listen to His voice so that you don’t miss a single assignment. When He calls you to something that seems beyond yourself, know that it probably is. And, understand that is right where He wants you. He wants us in places where we can only succeed if we are in complete dependence on Him. He will EQUIP you to do ALL that He assigns you.
What is your assignment?
We all have different callings, different giftings, and different assignments. We even have different seasons that bring us into wildly different assignments. Your assignment today might be the care of your new born baby. It could be the tender watch of an aging parent. God may have entrusted you with the loving care of a handicapped or severely ill child. He may have called you right within the walls of your own home. Or, He may have called you to the mission field in your community, your school, or even in another country.
My encouragement to you today – take the assignment He has FOR YOU! Don’t look at mine or anyone else’s wishing theirs was yours. Remember, He has given you every spiritual gift you need. He knows exactly where you will have the greatest influence. And, best of all, He knows what the reward of your obedience will be.
My challenge to you today is – listen, listen closely to the Lord. He has an assignment for you. He has gifted you for it. He “will keep you strong” to complete it. He is “inviting you into partnership with Jesus.” Go, and know, He is with you. If God has called you, He will EQUIP you.
My prayer for us today –
God help us to hear Your call. Give us the strength to understand that You know best where we should be. Prompt us to trust You with our lives. Direct us, God. Give us peace as we go. Strengthen us where we are weak. Give us our assignments and bless us as we seek to serve You well. Let faithful obedience rule in our hearts. Use us God for Your glory. AMEN!
